چکیده

The Scottish Vowel Length Rule (SVLR) – formerly ‘Aitken’s Law’ [1, 5, 6] – is a contextconditioned vowel length alternation that in Scottish and Northern Irish varieties of English coexists with the so-called Voicing Effect (VE, or ‘pre-fortis clipping’) [3]. It is known that SVLRlike alternations occur in varieties of English spoken in northern England close to the Scottish border [1, 4, 8], but to date little systematic analysis of the extent to which SVLR can be said to be a property of Tyneside English (TE) has been undertaken. Pilot data presented in this paper suggest that for /iː uː aɪ/ the SVLR can be said to operate, if only partially, in TE.

Vowel Duration in Scottish English Speaking Children

In most English accents vowel length is approximately 50% greater before a voiced consonant than before its voiceless cognate (the ‘Voicing Effect’). In Scottish English it is conditioned by the ‘Scottish Vowel Length Rule’. The lengthening environments of this rule overlap with those of the Voicing Effect. The phonetic details of the Scottish Vowel Length Rule and its relationship with the Voi...

The Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners

This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Interaction between the Scottish English System of Prominence and Vowel Length

This study looks into interaction between the quasi-phonemic vowel length contrast in Scottish English and its word-prosodic system. We show that under the same phrasal accent the phonetically short vowels of the morphologically conditioned quasi-phonological contrast are produced with significantly more laryngeal effort (spectral balance) than the long ones, while the vowels do not differ in q...

Vowel Duration and Spectral Balance in Scottish English and Russian

This is a cross-linguistic study into the effect of extrinsic vowel duration conditioning on the realisation of spectral balance (intensity distribution above 0.5 kHz) in Scottish English and Russian. The materials consisted of monosyllabic words containing the vowel /i/ in prominent syllables, with varied right consonantal context in order to trigger extrinsic vowel duration conditioning. Resu...
